Poets do not go mad; but chess-players do

“Poets do not go mad; but chess-players do. Mathematicians go mad, and cashiers; but creative artists very seldom. I am not, as will be seen, in any sense attacking logic: I only say that this danger does lie in logic, not in imagination.”

― G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

The problem with logic, I think, is that it is a dead end for the artist.  What an artist needs — what I need, at any rate — is to maintain a sense of wonder that is too easily dulled or lost outright. It’s the life behind things that I’m looking for.
